My 117th video features a question about “Tug” McGraw to Art Shamsky. Art won a World Series with the 1969 New York Mets, and he played in eight games for the 1972 Oakland Athletics. Thanks to Anton Rosner for filming the question.

Tug McGraw is just one of the many sports connections that exist beween New York and Philadelphia. In Major League Baseball, Tug McGraw, Richie Ashburn, and Lenny Dykstra played for the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. In basketball, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving, and World B. Free attended high schools in New York, and they played for the Philadelphia 76ers. In football, Herman Edwards played for the Philadelphia Eagles, and he was the head coach of the New York Jets. Also, Joe Klecko attended Temple Univeristy, and he played for the Jets. In addition, Sean Landeta punted for the Philadelphia Stars, New York Giants, and the Eagles. In the NHL, Mike Keenan and Fred Shero coached the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers. Also, Mike Richter attended Pennsylvania’s Germantown Academy, and he played for the Rangers.  Finally, Philadelphia’s favorite son is “Rocky” Balboa! Sylvester Stallone, the creator of the six Rocky movies, was born in New York City. Those are some of the many sports connections that exist between the “City of Brotherly Love” and “The Big Apple!”

My 116th video features Ed Charles. Ed played for the Kansas City Athletics, and he won the 1969 World Series with the New York Mets. In the first part of the video, Charles recites a poem about Jackie Robinson! In 1980, all four Philadelphia teams reached the finals! First, the New York Islanders defeated the Flyers for their first of four consecutive Stanley Cups. Second, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Sixers for their first of five championships in the 1980s. Third, the Phillies defeated the Kansas City Royals for their first World Series win. Finally, the Oakland Raiders defeated the Eagles for their second Super Bowl victory on January 25, 1981. Thus, it was an amazing year for the “City of Brotherly Love!”

In September 1980, Sharon Jones became the first African-American woman executive in Major League Baseball when Oakland’s Walter Haas hired her! Also, in 1987, Sharon spoke out against an MLB owner’s racist remark! So, my 111th video features her. Thanks to Gary Eng for filming the poem.

Javier Lopez is a superb relief pitcher! Not only did Lopez win two Fall Classics with San Francisco, but he also won a World Series with Boston. Therefore, my 110th video features him. Thanks to Julia Bringans for filming the poem.

Elijah “Pumpsie” Green attended El Cerrito High School! Also, on July 21, 1959, he became the Boston Red Sox’s first African-American player. So, my 109th video features him. Thanks to Ben Jacobs for filming the poem.

From 1972 to 1974, the Oakland A’s won three consecutive Fall Classics! In the 1973 World Series, Reggie Jackson earned the MVP Award. Also, in the 1974 Fall Classic, Dick Green earned the Babe Ruth Award. So, my 108th video features them.

Like Manny Trillo and Joe Morgan, Darold Knowles played for the Oakland Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies. When the A’s won their three consecutive Fall Classics, Knowles effectively pitched for them. So, my 107th video features him. Thanks to Kathi Williams for filming the poem.
